Sean wins Corn na nOg medal! |
At last Sean Tierney’s Corn Na nÓg final took place having been postponed from Casement Park a week or so earlier. If anything the weather on Saturday 6th March 2010 was a huge improvement and the venue Derrytresk GFC in Co. Tyrone was awash with sunshine and full of eager anticipation.
Sean and his team St Colman’s had trained hard the week before and were keen to get going. They had played St Patrick’s Maghera in a previous friendly and managed to beat them, but that would all count for nothing, because St Patrick’s Maghera, last year’s Dalton champions, started very strongly and for long periods were camped in St Colman’s half, exerting immense pressure. St Colman’s struggled to get quality ball and many of their attacks broke down due to St Pat’s strong defence. Despite this St Colman’s had their moments and stayed in touch. Both teams missed opportunities and Sean was unlucky to have a free pushed out wide. Before the break St Pat’s pulled away and finished the half four points clear
St Colman’s 0 – 4 St Patrick’s Maghera 0 – 8.
Half time was a welcome break for St Colman’s and their supporters. After such a difficult half something special was needed. St Colman’s would need to score first to reduce the deficit and give some hope.
It could not have started better. St Colman’s scored two points straight away and you could see the lift this gave the players. But St Pat’s were not lying down and they came back again and established a four point lead. St Colman’s missed some chances and things were now looking ominous with the score at 0 – 6 to 0 – 10 but, Sean Tierney pulled a point back with a free. St Pat’s then went ahead by five points. Having started the second half so well it must have been hard for St Colman’s to fall further behind. But, to their credit they did not give up. Sean Tierney scored another free and following a tremendous tackle won a side line ball from which another point was added. With the points gap now at four something special did happen. Sean Tierney received the ball not far inside St Pat’s half and out wide close to the side line. Sean had space in front of him and at great pace headed for goal and unleashed a powerful shot drilling the ball into the back of the net. The goalkeeper and defenders had no chance. It was a fantastic effort, a moment of brilliance which brought St Colman’s to within a point. It was now 1 – 9 to 0 – 13. St Colman’s were fired up! They went down to 14 players and Sean moved into defence to provide cover. But St. Colman’s were able to dig even deeper. The last moments were nail biting as St Pat’s went ahead again. There could not be long left on the clock as both sides traded points, only for St Colman’s to snatch it from St Pat’s in the dying seconds to win the match by a point 1- 14 to 0 – 16.
What a match, a true test of character and a fantastic team effort! Well done!
It is true what they say, “It’s never over ‘til it’s over”.
Congratulations to Sean and all his team mates!
